Taxi Driver (1976)

Taxi Driver

First Impression: From The TV Set trailer:
David Duchovny: It’s like he’s only got two modes, either way over the top and when I tried to bring him down, he’s like Travis Bickle.
Judy Greer: …
David Duchovny: You’ve never seen Taxi Driver?
Judy Greer: I know.

David: If I don’t worry about the content of my show, then I’m part of the problem. I’m making the world more mediocre!
Judy: I think that you’re overstating the situation just a little bit.
David: But you’ve never seen Taxi Driver!
Judy: I’m going to rent the Taxi Driver, OK?!

And that’s why I decided to watch it, except I downloaded instead of rent.

Afterthoughts: I just realized I’ve already watch 4 other Scorsese movies already (Bringing Out the Dead, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed) and loved them all, so this should be a great one. But I had my doubts with Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster. It turned out to be quite good, I was very impressed with everyone’s performance. The movie was also darker than I thought, and also got a little bloody at the end. I wouldn’t say this is my favorite movie, but just as David Duchovny think, everyone should watch this because it’s such a classic. “You talking to me?” I just want to know what happened to De Niro because all other movies he’s in, I just couldn’t stand him, even Raging Bull.

Bringing Out the Dead (1999)

Bringing Out the Dead

First Impression: What is this? My dad is so random when picking movies…

Afterthoughts: This movie is soo trippy it rivals Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Nicholas Cage plays this paramedic who pretty much looks like the living dead that keeps hallucinating about this girl he “killed”. Full of seemingly out-of-place background music and nauseating scenes, still pretty laugh-out-loud funny. Watching this will make you stoned.

The Departed (2006)

The Departed

First Impression: I’d watched the Infernal Affairs trilogy, which is what this movie was based on, and my brother and I thought we should give this a chance as well. PLUS, DiCaprio’s in it, so it already looked promising.

Afterthoughts: This was great, though significantly different from the Hong Kong version. This movie won 4 Oscars this year, including Best Picture. Great acting by everyone, and as usual I loved DiCaprio’s performance. It’s too bad Mark Wahlberg didn’t win Best Supporting Actor because I enjoyed his character the most. There were some unnecessary Nicholson scenes that should’ve been cut, but otherwise, go rent this and you won’t regret it.

The Aviator (2004)

The Aviator

First Impression: A movie about flying? Won’t miss it for the world.

Afterthoughts: The movie is based on famous tycoon Howard Hughes’ struggle in making movies, designing planes, and managing his airline in his early years. Leonardo DiCaprio did an amazing job being Howard Hughes. His voice and mannerism just completely transcended “acting”; he WAS Howard Hughes. It’s a shame he didn’t win an Oscar for this role, losing out to the overrated Jamie Foxx. (The movie too lost to the unoriginal Million Dollar Baby). It’s a MUST SEE…really!
