Lions for Lambs (2007)

Lions For Lambs

First Impression: The only reason why I rented this was because of the cover. Well Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep on the cover that is. I didn’t even know this came out in theatre.

Afterthoughts: Having no expectation at all I found this to be a decent political drama. There were many plots intertwined as one, with Cruise and Streep playing the roles of senator and reporter respectively, the promising political science student turned slacker, and the two friends who decided to join the army to prove their point. Without going through what my view is on the Afghanistan war, I think this would be a nice film for young adults, especially the segment with Redford and the slacker student. It’s disheartening to see people not care about anything at all. Change doesn’t come from talk, and apathy won’t solve the problem. The world doesn’t owe you anything. Some people feel like this movie is more like a lecture, well then I don’t think they’ve ever sat through a boring lecture.

Letters From Iwo Jima (2006)

Letters From Iwo Jima

First Impression: I’ve been meaning to rent both this and Flags of Our Father because well, it’s war movies! They only have this one available for rental though.

Afterthoughts: It’s nice to see the other side of the war; every country goes to war thinking they’re on the right side. I did wonder if the Japanese were accurately portrayed. I know they had kamikaze pilots, but to *SPOILER* blow yourself up for no apparent reason and certainly without strategic gain, that’s not courage and honour, that’s just plain stupidity. And with the billion upon billion of naval vessels that the American had (or as portrayed in the movie), did they really have a chance?

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Little Miss Sunshine

First Impression: We have a coupon for a free 7 days rental, and I’ve heard good things about this movie. And it won 2 Oscars, which means it’s got to be good!

Afterthoughts: Paul Dano again! I thought he looked extremely familiar, especially when I watched There Will Be Blood the day before. It was a little slow in the beginning, but the their trek to the pageant was genuinely heartwarming. The dance by Abigail Breslin was one of the most hilarious and unexpected scenes I’ve seen in a movie.

Love Actually (2003)

Love Actually

First Impression: Well, I was curious. Someone said this was a great romantic comedy…and most of my favourite British actors are in it so why not.

Afterthoughts: Love, actually, is quite boring. This may be because I was ironing my uniform when I was watching it. There were some funny moments, but I didn’t laugh much. I did find myself rooting for all the couples to get together, so the film did one thing right. A movie about finding love at Christmas time. Everyone was top-notch in their performance. Bill Nighy was surprisingly, the only one that made me laugh out loud. And I’m just amazed at the fact that they can always manage to get Colin Firth wet in any movie he’s in (or at least the ones I’ve seen him in). All I can say is…he looks much better when wet. And if only our prime minister is as good looking as Hugh Grant. I can’t imagine anyone crying over this though, especially not raspy-voiced bad-boy TV-god Kiefer Sutherland who admitted so. This is probably better watched during Christmas time with your significant other…not while you were ironing your uniform and polishing your boots.

Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

Lucky Number Slevin

First Impression: Little bit of action, little bit of fun, Hartnett and Willis. This should be pretty good.

Afterthoughts: I guess sometimes the down side of watching a lot of movies is that you often figure out the plot twist before anyone does, so the ending was sort of disappointing (and dragged too long). The rest of the movie was quite funny, though it tried too hard to be confusing. I even liked Lucy Liu in this, so that was something.

Lord of War

Lord of War

First Impression: I like Nicholas Cage, sometimes, but didn’t expect this to be a good movie. From the cover, I just thought this was about gang war.

Afterthoughts: It’s hard to have a movie about morality and ethics and tons of action, but this movie did it and it was quite enjoyable. Cage plays a arms-dealer who sells guns to mobs after the Cold War. The story took place in the 80s, but it probably still applies today.
