The Duchess (2008)

The Duchess

First Impression: I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the big wigs in the movie, but it’s a period piece with Keira Knightley, how could I miss it?

Afterthoughts: I have to agree with most of the critics that this really is Keira’s best work so far. In all of her previous movies, there was always this lack of raw emotion, a disconnect most evident when she’s beside a better actor. However, I don’t think I can find any fault in her portrayal of the Duchess at all. The wittiness and youthfulness, the sorrow and pain, not one second felt like “acting”. Combining with Ralph Fiennes’ equally wonderful Duke of Devonshire, who had just the right amount of cold-hearted sarcasm you couldn’t help but to laugh at despite such a tragic story, it was one of the best theatre experience I’ve had. The overall movie is a little straightforward and predictable, especially if you’ve seen the movie trailer. The plot that involves the love between the Duchess and Charles Gray could have been elaborated on, as with her supposed popularity with the public.

Atonement (2007)

First Impression: I had waited for this movie ever since it was announced. And when the trailer came out, it was hard not to fall in love with it already. The fact it was directed by Joe Wright meant I couldn’t even miss this at all.

Afterthoughts: Maybe it was such high expectation but I was a tiny bit disappointed. The first half was wonderful. It was well paced with just the right amount of suspense. The direction also reminded me of the creepy yet effective “stalkerish” feeling Pride & Prejudice (2005) had. However, in the second half, it was like a big disconnect. The timeline turned confusing, the trailing shot a little overdone, and the ending a bit anticlimatic. Though given the chance, I still want to watch it again.

Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End (2007)

Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End

First Impression: OK, I admit it, I love Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley and I KNOW sequels always suck ass, and still I had to watch it for my birthday. Call it self-inflicted torture if you will…

Afterthoughts: One of these days, I’ll re-watch the entire series back to back because what the fuck was that? I mean, not only did I have to sit at the very front of the theatre but also to be subjected to this huge pile of crap (which lasted 3 whole hours by the way)? The only reason I didn’t leave the theatre was because I paid for the movie ticket (and did I mention how much I loved Johnny and Keira) I was just confused about the entire story, not really remembering what the first two were about other than Sparrow and Lizzie’s illicit (but HOT) kiss. At the end, not only did they dismiss their onscreen chemistry but also brought back stupid Turner into the picture and even had a weird post-coital leg rub scene that I still don’t quite get. If you still want to watch this, be SURE to watch the other two first AND watch with subtitle on.

Domino (2005)

Domino

First Impression: I love it when Keira Knightley says “My name is Domino Harvey, I am a Bounty Hunter” on the trailer.

Afterthoughts: Ok, so I just watched this because Keira Knightley was in it and otherwise I wouldn’t have wasted any time on shitty movies like this. I downloaded the theatre cam version so everything was abit shakey and the audio was pretty sad, but nonetheless, the movie still sucked big time. I did enjoy Keira doing the nunchucks though. She has mentioned before in interviews that she practiced them while filming Pride & Prejudice AND wearing her Elizabeth Bennet outfit. Now THAT’S something I want to see.

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley
Full Name: Keira Christina Knightley
Birth date: March 22, 1985 (22yo)
Height: 5′ 7″ (170cm)
Eye Color: Brown
Requested by: Jessie

Why is she featured?
Because she has a SEXY, killer accent…and look at her abs, Damn! Even her name is hawt.

But she’s so skinny and she’s got no breast whatsoever ewww!
Well gee, since nowadays we cannot verbally attack people who are obese because “they can’t help themselves” we need to insult those who are naturally thin? Do you think all women in the world without an ample bosom should get implants too?

What’s her story?
Dropped out of school at the age of 16, Keira had no formal acting training, but she is determined to try a variety of roles and expand her repertoire.

Keira’s first blockbuster (but highly secretive) role was playing Sabe, the queen’s decoy in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Because of their similar looks, most Natalie Portman fans thought the decoy was played by Natalie herself; it was even promoted as such. Bend It Like Beckham was her breakout hit, but it was really Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (with big name co-star Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom) that made her name known. Her many recent movies include Domino, Pride and Prejudice (which earned her an Oscar nomination, such rare feat for a young actress), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

What’s her current project?
The third installment of Pirates of the Carribean will be coming out May 2007. Two new drama, Silk and Atonement, will be released August and September 2007 respectively.

On Pirates of the Caribbean:
“I had a Scarlet O’Hara thing, she gets her waist down to 18 and a half inches – so I thought I would try that. For 5 minutes it’s fantastic – you have this tiny waist and fantastic cleavage, but oxygen deprivation is a big problem!”

On her body:
“Apparently on the Internet I’m a sexy beanpole, tomboy beanpole. I’m a tomboy beanpole? I can’t use a computer, so maybe I’m a bit out of the loop. I don’t know whether to be flattered or not flattered. The beanpole bit, is that good? Can you be a sexy beanpole?”

On her abs:
“I don’t do a thing to keep fit, I just cannot make myself work out. My abs are just luck – my mum has good ones so it’s a family trait.”

Pride & Prejudice (2005)

Pride & Prejudice

First Impression: Found out about this movie when I did the profile on Keira Knightley. I’ve never read the book before, and from Kimmy’s reaction, I was reluctant to try. Then I saw Matthew Macfadyen in the credit. Who can resist that?!

Afterthoughts: I read the book before I went to see the movie, so the plot was fresh in my mind. I think that’s one of the reason why I thought the movie was a bit rushed. It was a beautiful movie however, in a sense where each scene is deliberately arranged to look like a painting, so kudos to Joe Wright for his wonderful directing. The missing plot points made the story weaker in retrospect but acting was superb from the whole cast. The chemistry between KK and MM was so electrifying you could actually see it spill out of your screen and drown you to death. What it missed in plot points it made up in all the tiny details Wright added to each act, so definitely worth seeing twice.

Love Actually (2003)

Love Actually

First Impression: Well, I was curious. Someone said this was a great romantic comedy…and most of my favourite British actors are in it so why not.

Afterthoughts: Love, actually, is quite boring. This may be because I was ironing my uniform when I was watching it. There were some funny moments, but I didn’t laugh much. I did find myself rooting for all the couples to get together, so the film did one thing right. A movie about finding love at Christmas time. Everyone was top-notch in their performance. Bill Nighy was surprisingly, the only one that made me laugh out loud. And I’m just amazed at the fact that they can always manage to get Colin Firth wet in any movie he’s in (or at least the ones I’ve seen him in). All I can say is…he looks much better when wet. And if only our prime minister is as good looking as Hugh Grant. I can’t imagine anyone crying over this though, especially not raspy-voiced bad-boy TV-god Kiefer Sutherland who admitted so. This is probably better watched during Christmas time with your significant other…not while you were ironing your uniform and polishing your boots.
