Home on the Range (2004)

Home on the Range

First Impression: I was over at someone’s house and this was the only movie we both haven’t seen before, so what the hell.

Afterthoughts: Home on the Range is basically the reason why I don’t watch most of the Disney cartoons. Most of their works are about goodness prevails with highly anthropomorphic (a word I learned from Logan Echolls!) characters and jokes that are obviously geared towards younger children with no critical thinking skills. Adding the terribly annoying and constant yodelling in the movie and it just made me want to puke. My gods, I watched this a few months ago and I still have those songs stuck in my head. Please avoid this movie at all cost.

A History of Violence (2005)

A History of Violence

First Impression: None. My brother wanted to watch it.

Afterthoughts: This is a strange one. The plot is very straightforward and pretty predictable if you’ve watched enough movies, so what I watched for was acting and directing. Acting was above average considering the materials. That rape on the staircase scene was quite disturbing, not because of the subject matter, but it didn’t feel like a rape at all. From both actors’ interaction, it seemed more erotic and kinky than horrible and painful (well kinda…I bet her back was sore). The film tried to tell me a message about violence and its impact, but it never really catches on. In the end, it was just…meh. It’s not a bad movie at all, so I don’t really know why I don’t like it. See for yourself.

Hidalgo (2004)

Hidalgo

First Impression: Another one of dad’s random pick.

Afterthoughts: This is a pretty simple film about a cowboy name Frank Hopkins (played by Viggo Mortenson of LOTR’s Aragorn and A History of Violence fame) who accepted a challenge to a 3000-mile endurance riding competition. Not much to say…I’m just glad they didn’t make have a kissing scene between Frank and the foreign princess in the end.
