Funny Games (2008)

Funny Games

First Impression: I heard about this movie (or more precisely, saw the poster) on the blog Stale Popcorn.

Afterthoughts: I didn’t watch the original Austrian film by the same writer/director, Michael Haneke, so I can’t compare, but really liked this film. It was nothing like I expected. Just like the Joker in Batman, it gets pretty scary when the villains start being polite and funny because you never know their ulterior motive. I’ve never watched a movie that made me laugh so much during torture scenes. Maybe Haneke’s right about our morbid curiosity. And I just want to say Naomi Watts is such a great actress…hot and talented.

Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

Flags of Our Fathers

First Impression: I meant to watch this first but it was never in. Glad I could rent it this time.

Afterthoughts: I’m not sure how accurate the story is but I loved it. The soldiers who reluctantly (for some) got sucked into fame and glory just for putting up a flag, they need to constantly carry the guilt of being mislabeled as a hero. And it’s also depressing to see them not treated with respect as veterans after the war, though understandably no one had the luxury of creature comfort during those times. It’s films such as this that always remind me how the civilian never understand the military. The current argument about the poorly named Canadian Sacrifice medal is a good example. Rules are black and white, you can’t bend the rule because your child didn’t receive a medal. That’s a debate for another time…

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

First Impression: I have been looking forward to this movie for so fucking long, ever since I knew it was in production, just because Kristen Bell looked completely HOT in that bikini.

Afterthoughts: Why do I always expect too much from a comedy. It was funny, but probably only for half of the movie. I couldn’t stand Russell Brand and his hobo hair, and can someone please get Jonah Hill off the big screen, he’s not as funny as he think he is. The only redeemable thing about this movie was of course Kristen Bell (looking HOT) as “sexy crime fighter” Sarah Marshall. You can pretty much forget about everyone else.

Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane (2007)

Flight of the Living Dead

First Impression: One of the six movies we watched for my Zombie Night movie marathon at home. This movie was chosen completely at random.

Afterthoughts: This movie is fucking hilarious. Oh my god, I think I actually enjoyed it more than Snakes on a Plane, which this movie is loosely based on. The acting was atrocious, the dialogue and plot even worse than your average porn (and yes, I just admit I’ve watched porn), but damn if it didn’t make everybody laugh out loud. The situation was just so ridiculous that it’s hard NOT to enjoy making fun of its crappiness. I won’t be watching this again for sure, but I’m kinda glad I rented this for the Zombie Night.

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Full Metal Jacket

First Impression: I don’t remember how many times I’ve caught this on TV, but not once did I manage to watch it in one sitting, so I decided to download it one night to watch it in its entirety.

Afterthoughts: To say the first half of the movie was different from the second half would be the understatement of the year. It felt like two entirely separate movies, which wasn’t a bad thing per se. The first half was particularly fun to watch because I always love watching people go through military training in movies. This half also has the classic scenes of the drill sergeant berating the recruits in every way possible with every insult known to men. Now that’s entertainment. The second half of the movie follows the graduated recruits to the war in Vietnam, where the pace of the film surprisingly slows down. It’s still a classic you shouldn’t miss.

Fido (2006)

Fido

First Impression: I was bored one day and decided to watch an indie.

Afterthoughts: This is a comedy about having zombies as pets, which sounded quite ridiculous but it was a nice little film and fun for the whole family. It’s not a laugh out loud kind of comedy, but this is the kind I enjoy the most. Not once did I feel that I was FORCED to laugh at a certain scene. I especially love the romance between Fido and Carrie-Anne Moss’ character, but Carrie-Anne’s always awesome to watch. If you’re sick of crappy comedies about romance, teen drama, bowel movement, then this film is for you.

Fifty Pills (2006)

Fifty Pills

First Impression: Kristen Bell was in it so I decided to check it out.

Afterthoughts: It’s an OK teen comedy. A lot classier than American Pie but some of the jokes were a little forced and fell flat. Kristen Bell wasn’t on much and she was only playing the sweet girl next door. I don’t really like the actor who plays Darren, the whiny protaganist who resorted to selling ecstasy in order to pay for tuition. It actually didn’t make a whole lot of sense because, hello, you have a fucking Mac on your desk retard and you’re only paying for $800 of tuition. Even though John Hensley’s character, Coleman was a real asshole and a MJ look-a-like, I loved his performance. I wouldn’t mind being roommate with him, so move over Darren.

(First day moving into dorm – Coleman talking to movers)
Coleman: It says “Bathroom” on the fucking box, does that look like the bathroom to you? What’s next? You’re gonna shit on my bed too?

Flightplan (2005)

Flightplan

First Impression: I didn’t want to see this, but my Dad insisted on renting it. Fine, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, maybe all the critics are wrong.

Afterthoughts: This wouldn’t be such a bad movie…if Jodie Foster wasn’t in it! This was an OK movie to begin with. It started out with Foster and her kid on a plane but when they both fell asleep, the kid disappeared. Plausible, but then Foster started to act, just like she did in Panic Room…’me against the world’. It just went downhill from there. If you don’t hate Jodie Foster, then you won’t find any problem with this film, but don’t expect it to be realistic.
