17 Again (2009)

17 Again

First Impression: Well here’s a random review. I’m indifferent towards Zac Efron (didn’t watch High School Musical) and do find him cute but too pretty for his own good. Wait, so why did I watch this? I was reading the Television Without Pity review and they said the B-plot (about Zac’s nerd best friend Ned) was pretty sweet.

Afterthoughts: The main plot was just as I’d imagined, lots of incest jokes and many gratuitous “sexy” Zac Efron scenes, but I expected all of that anyway so let’s just focus on why I really watched the movie…Ned’s seduction of Zac’s principal Jane. I will never be as huge a nerd as Ned, so his quirkiness is hard to relate and somewhat over-the-top, but what a comedic gem it was when Ned finally had his dinner date with Jane, oh man it was so worth suffering the rest of the film. I do have a bone to pick though, and that was using Cat Power’s song “The Greatest” in that cheesy divorce courtroom scene. I learned of the song through a BSG vid with Starbuck and Kat, so I will never be able to associate that song with any romantic notion whatsoever.

Watching the Detectives (2007)

Watching the Detectives

First Impression: At first I was going to settle on “Up the Yangtze” when Ellen was at Rogers, but then Kimmy vehemently opposed to watching documentaries and we settled on this unknown little movie.

Afterthoughts: This movie was a pleasant surprise. If I had looked at the DVD cover or watched the trailer, I would never have rented it. Cillian Murphy to me was always the dude with the creepy eyes, and Lucy well, I just didn’t like her. The romance worked solely because of Cillian’s adorable portrayal of such a gullible yet lovable character. It would’ve been even better to cast someone else as the femme fatale (maybe Charlize Theron??). Lucy’s attempt at (faking) drunkenness just made me want to fast forward the scene. A lot of the frontal and overhead shots were a nice nod as well to the film noir genre…which also sadly reminds me of Veronica Mars (dammit!). The story was pretty simple yet quite effective (Kimmy would disagree) because I think deep down everyone craves an adventure…or ten. I have to change my mind about Cillian too; when he was spotting his shades and rocking out in his backyard he was just drop dead gorgeous…ok maybe it’s because I couldn’t see his eyes in that scene.

Burn After Reading (2008)

Burn After Reading

First Impression: I wanted to watch it when it came out, but as usual, I was too lazy to go. Went along with Abha to watch at UBC Norm. I just hoped it was nothing like Ocean Eleven, all “witty” banter with no heist action.

Afterthoughts: The first thing that came to mind while watching the movie, was how much fun the whole cast had in making this movie. Brad Pitt obviously enjoyed his role as the clueless airhead personal trainer. There were quite a few laughs in the movie, especially in midst of violence and gore. I’ve only seen another Coen brothers’ movie, No Country for Old Men, but I could definitely recognize the same twisted humour in both films. (tiny spoiler coming) There was this particular um device that Clooney’s character made, and I must have a really dirty mind because I knew exactly what it was before he moved the chair. Overall a pretty original comedy with great acting. Really loved Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton.

Tropic Thunder (2008)

Tropic Thunder

First Impression: I didn’t even watch the trailer of this but I thought the premise was pretty funny. And I’ve never seen such a highly lauded (B+) Ben Stiller movie since Zoolander.

Afterthoughts: The movie did made me laugh about 70% of the time, the rest of it was probably due to the unfunny performance by Jack Black and Downey being too black for me to understand what the hell he’s actually saying. Loved the cameo by Tom Cruise as the ugly ass studio executive. And thank you Ben Stiller for not making this another one of your failed comedy (and while I was doing research on Stiller, he seems to have another Focker sequel lined up…please tell me that will go straight to video.) I would love to rent the movie again just to catch all of Downey’s hilarious performance.

Death at a Funeral (2007)

Death at a Funeral

First Impression: Caught the trailer somehow, probably while I was researching news on Matthew Macfadyen, for some forgotten reason. I liked the two movies I’ve watched with MM (P&P and In My Father’s Den, and British comedy are usually funn(ier).

Afterthoughts: Well, the beginning was fairly mediocre. I found there were too many character subplot going on and most jokes were just cheap laughs or already seen in the trailer. It wasn’t until *SPOILER* someone actually “died” that it started getting interesting. Keeley Hawes, who played MM’s onscreen wife, is his actual wife in real life, and they do look cute together. The midget secret lover thing got kinda tiring after awhile, along with Simon high on drugs.

Juno (2007)

Juno

First Impression: Everybody said this was a great movie…except Jessie. Since I don’t value Jessie’s opinion that much, i decided to rent it anyway. It did win an Oscar, and I need to watch all the Oscar winners this year.

Afterthoughts: Well damn, maybe I should have listened to Jessie after all. Other than a few scenes this was just completely boring and completely overrated. Ellen Page’s Juno was possibly the most unsympathetic character I’ve ever seen in a movie. Was I suppose to crack up at her sarcastic comments? Was I suppose to find her love for punk rock relatable? Was I not suppose to be annoyed at her complete lack of respect for anybody? Because all I did was trying to sit through this movie to get my rental’s worth. Let’s move on to Michael Cera, who I found great on Arrested Development. He needs to find another range of acting style, one that doesn’t involve him being a complete dork. It was funny the first time, but just tiring in every other movies he’s in. And Jason Bateman…how could you choose Ellen Page over Jennifer Garner?! This isn’t a comedy, this is on the tragedy level of a train wreck.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

First Impression: I have been looking forward to this movie for so fucking long, ever since I knew it was in production, just because Kristen Bell looked completely HOT in that bikini.

Afterthoughts: Why do I always expect too much from a comedy. It was funny, but probably only for half of the movie. I couldn’t stand Russell Brand and his hobo hair, and can someone please get Jonah Hill off the big screen, he’s not as funny as he think he is. The only redeemable thing about this movie was of course Kristen Bell (looking HOT) as “sexy crime fighter” Sarah Marshall. You can pretty much forget about everyone else.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Little Miss Sunshine

First Impression: We have a coupon for a free 7 days rental, and I’ve heard good things about this movie. And it won 2 Oscars, which means it’s got to be good!

Afterthoughts: Paul Dano again! I thought he looked extremely familiar, especially when I watched There Will Be Blood the day before. It was a little slow in the beginning, but the their trek to the pageant was genuinely heartwarming. The dance by Abigail Breslin was one of the most hilarious and unexpected scenes I’ve seen in a movie.

Stardust (2007)

Stardust

First Impression: I have pretty much all of Neil Gaiman’s books, and Stardust is one of my favourite. When I heard it was going to be adapted into a movie I had my doubts. It grew when I saw the movie trailer, especially when I didn’t really find Charlie Cox that attractive or charming. And I guess I was a little pissed about what they did to Captain Shakespeare as well.

Afterthoughts: Honestly, I think this was one of the few movies I truly enjoyed last year (that is, watched last year…not came out). I’ve never been a fan of such epic fantasies like Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia. Sure, the movie special effects were low budget, but so what, I thought the film was fairly faithful to the book itself. I think it did a good job of capturing that whimsical and magical, romantic and comedic story. And come to think of it, I think that’s why I like the TV show Pushing Daisies! Anyway, back to Stardust. You know, I didn’t think it was possible. When I saw the trailer, I thought Tristan’s flippy hair looked entirely stupid on Cox, but when Captain Shakespeare gave him that haircut, he literally turned from small town boy “cute” to a fucking man. I also thought Claire Danes was great in this as well; especially her attempt at British accent. And if you need any more reasons to rent this, consider this. After British pop band “Take That” watched a screening of Stardust, they loved it so much that they immediately wrote a song for it. I don’t think the song played in the theatrical release but when this played at the end of the DVD it was just perfect.

Here are two videos for the song. One for those who hasn’t watch the movie, and one for those who did, respectively.

Walk All Over Me (2007)

First Impression: I think it’s pretty obvious I would watch this. As Robert Cuffley (the director) put it…Tricia Helfer, dominatrix; Leelee Sobieski, dominatrix…the movie practically sells itself! Not only that, I was able to go to a special screening with Tricia, Robert, and few other casts members as special guests! This movie is like a dream come true.

Afterthoughts: I loved this movie so much I bought the DVD as well. Maybe I’m a little (ok…a lot) biased but it’s such a fun movie. The protagonist (Leelee) maybe a little stupid but the situation is so laughably entertaining. Acting, directing, music, it was all perfectly executed. One of the high points of the movie was Tricia dressed up as a police officer….hot damn. I noticed a lot of people gave this movie a low review, but what else do they want? Actual S&M? In the actual screening I went to at Tinseltown, I also got to “meet” Rekha Sharma (Tory in BSG) and Tahmoh Penikett (Helo in BSG). Did I have the nerve to talk to talk to any of them though? Nope…
This has become one of my favorite movie, so do watch it.
