Amazing Grace (2006)

Amazing Grace

First Impression: Talk about renting unknown movies…my dad rented this because he liked the name.

Afterthoughts: The movie chronicles William Wilberforce’s political battle to abolish the slave trade. The movie naturally played like a history lesson, which means a little too straightforward for my taste. Ioan Gruffudd did a great job as the lead. I know he’s been in quite a few American movies but he will always remind me of the Hornblower series, which I’ve never seen and only heard of because of Jamie Bamber haha.

American Gangster (2007)

American Gangster

First Impression: I can’t really stand Denzel Washington but my dad wanted to watch it so what the hell.

Afterthoughts: A decent crime movie with great acting. Despite what I think about Washington, he does have great charisma and played the role of Frank Lucas perfectly. From the beginning of his gang life to the fall of his empire, both Russell Crowe and him did a great job portraying the antagonism and mutual respect. The movie actually reminds me of Catch Me If You Can, with a similar cat and mouse, cop vs criminal setup.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Scanner Darkly

First Impression: I wanted to see this when it came out, but never got to it until I found it in the library.

Afterthoughts: I think this movie is worth watching for the special effects alone. The constantly flowing and swirling really added alot to the feeling of euphoria. Once again, Keanu Reeves did his usual imitation of a wooden block but who cares, he’s nice to look at. And he looks like a stoner anyway (Hi Ted!). Other than him, I think everybody did a wonderful job in acting hilariously paranoid and drug-addict like. I especially liked Rory Cochrane’s character’s constant obsessiveness about imaginary bugs. One of these days I’m gonna check out Philip K. Dick’s books.

Atonement (2007)

First Impression: I had waited for this movie ever since it was announced. And when the trailer came out, it was hard not to fall in love with it already. The fact it was directed by Joe Wright meant I couldn’t even miss this at all.

Afterthoughts: Maybe it was such high expectation but I was a tiny bit disappointed. The first half was wonderful. It was well paced with just the right amount of suspense. The direction also reminded me of the creepy yet effective “stalkerish” feeling Pride & Prejudice (2005) had. However, in the second half, it was like a big disconnect. The timeline turned confusing, the trailing shot a little overdone, and the ending a bit anticlimatic. Though given the chance, I still want to watch it again.

Annapolis (2006)

Annapolis

First Impression: I just love watching people do military training.

Afterthoughts: Wow, what a joke. The military discipline was not there at all. Uniforms and rifle drill on the first day? I do not believe supply and admin works that fast. Their bed making skill is a disgrace. They even have a token fat guy who kept failing PT a la Full Metal Jacket. As far as I know, Annapolis requires you to PASS its PT test before you even get in, and I highly doubt fat boy was able to do it. Not only that, James Franco and Jordana Brewster’s characters (the former is a new recruit while the latter is an officer) started eyes-fucking before you can finish spelling FRATERNIZATION. Where’s the respect for officers? I know Franco is hot and all, but as his superior you can’t just jump on him whenever you’re horny. (Spoiler!) When they had the Brigade boxing championship (like BSG’s Unfinished Business but more formal) I was actually waiting to see if Franco and Tyrese Gibson would end up like Apollo and Starbuck, hugging each other out of exhaustion (and love). I’m glad Franco didn’t end up winning the match though, that’s like Kara Trace beating Lee Adama in a fair match.

Along Came Polly (2004)

Along Came Polly

First Impression: Looks funny enough.

Afterthoughts: He just got dumped by his newly-wed wife and decides to play it safe; she is the most random, spontaneous, adventurous risk-seeker. Match made in hell…but opposite attracts according to Hollywood. Standard Ben Stiller – sometimes you just feel sorry and embarrassed for him rather than laughing at (with) him. The running jokes about crap, gas, and bowel movement was a bit TOO much. Has some funny moments.

Austin Powers (1997-2002)

Austin Power: International Man of MysteryAustin Power 2: The Spy Who Shagged MeAustin Power 3: Goldmember

First Impression: Mike Myers just looks incredibly awesome in his Austin Powers outfit complete with British teeth.

Afterthoughts: The series chronicle the never-ending hostility between Austin Powers and Dr. Evil. In true Bond fashion, a new “Bond girl” is introduced as Austin’s partner in crime (and in bed…) in each film. It’s amazing how many characters Mike Myers can play – Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, Fat Bastard, and Goldmember. If you’ve never seen any of them, go rent them all NOW. You won’t regret it though the last one is slightly redundant and rehashes alot of the old jokes.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

A.I. Artificial Intelligence

First Impression: A movie about a robot wanting to become a real boy. Sounded slightly boring, but Steven Spielberg isn’t famous for nothing.

Afterthoughts: Hmm…there’s an underlying message in this movie, but I forgot what it was. Anyways, Haley Joel Osment (from Sixth Sense) was lovely in this role, considering that he has to portray the emotion and struggles of this part boy, part robot. Very convincing. Jude Law, though a bit unsettling in his robot makeup, was entertaining as a robotic gigolo. Not a MUST SEE, but worth a watch nonetheless.

Air Bud (1997)

Airbud

First Impression: It’s a movie about a b-ball playing dog, for god’s sake.

Afterthoughts: So I found this nifty little DVD inside my cereal box one day so I HAD to watch it because I’m incapable of resisting free stuff…no matter how shitty it is. The dog is a much better actor than Muniz, I’ll say, but then golden retriever is good at everything.

American Beauty (1999)

American Beauty

First Impression: Never heard of it until it won the Oscar for Best Picture. So it must be good.

Afterthoughts: Lester Burnham is currently in mid-life crisis and his family could care less, so he started to fantasize about his daughter’s teenage friend and to relive his 20’s. Great performance from everyone with stunning visual imagery whenever Lester’s fantasy pops up. Great movie overall. Worth seeing.
