17 Again (2009)

17 Again

First Impression: Well here’s a random review. I’m indifferent towards Zac Efron (didn’t watch High School Musical) and do find him cute but too pretty for his own good. Wait, so why did I watch this? I was reading the Television Without Pity review and they said the B-plot (about Zac’s nerd best friend Ned) was pretty sweet.

Afterthoughts: The main plot was just as I’d imagined, lots of incest jokes and many gratuitous “sexy” Zac Efron scenes, but I expected all of that anyway so let’s just focus on why I really watched the movie…Ned’s seduction of Zac’s principal Jane. I will never be as huge a nerd as Ned, so his quirkiness is hard to relate and somewhat over-the-top, but what a comedic gem it was when Ned finally had his dinner date with Jane, oh man it was so worth suffering the rest of the film. I do have a bone to pick though, and that was using Cat Power’s song “The Greatest” in that cheesy divorce courtroom scene. I learned of the song through a BSG vid with Starbuck and Kat, so I will never be able to associate that song with any romantic notion whatsoever.

300 (2006)

300

First Impression: I decided to watch the movie because of a crossfit/spartan training video on youtube…seriously. It’s a feature on the physical fitness training the cast had to take for the film, and I was inspired enough to thinking I’ll join the Crossfit Vancouver in the future. A bit pricey though…anyway.

Afterthoughts: I didn’t have very high expectation to begin with, as my brother told me there weren’t enough action. In the end I actually thought it was pretty awesome. Okay, so the constant grumbling and growling and PERFECT abs got annoying after awhile. The dark, flowing style reminded me of Sin City, which I also enjoyed, and not surprisingly as both movies were based on Frank Miller’s graphic novels. I’m not a history buff, so any discrepancy flew right by me, and given the chance (say on TV), I’ll be sure to catch it again.

50 First Dates (2004)

50 First Dates

First Impression: Your typical Adam Sandler movie.

Afterthoughts: Basically, Sandler fell in love with Drew Barrymore’s character, who’s only capable of retaining short-term memory. Pretty straight forward movie with a happy ending. What you see in the trailer is what you get, no more no less. And like many other Adam Sandler movie, it’s only partially funny. ‘nuf said.

8 Mile (2002)

8 Miles

First Impression: I really have no idea what propelled me to watch this…in theatre. It’s not like I can catch what they’re rapping about half the movie.

Afterthoughts: It’s a movie about Eminem’s struggle to stardom. That’s it. You can’t really expect much from him; he is, after all, a rapper. I guess it can be classified as heartwarming…if freestyle rapping warms your heart and lets you sleep at night. (spoiler!) Oh ya and he got beat up outside his house with his sister watching and crying at the window. Only watch if you’re a fan of Eminem. (Don’t look at me like that…his songs are pretty catchy yo?)

15 Minutes (2001)

15 Minutes

First Impression: Never heard of it. Another Rogers Video random aisle pick.

Afterthoughts: Engaging plot but totally forgettable (which means I don’t really remember what it was like). Robert De Niro plays a detective and is teamed up with an unwilling fire inspector (played by Edward Burns) to investigate a report of arson that was apparently used to cover up a homicide crime scene.

40 Days and 40 Nights (2002)

First Impression: This seemed like an alright comedy. Josh Hartnett was all the rage back then (um…grade 8?) and I was caught in crossfire. I even had this Teen People poster (fyi, I only bought TP when they include posters…) of him topless with his jeans was half-buttoned-up. (A racy teen mag, thinkofthechildren!)

Afterthoughts: Ok comedy. Not that funny, sometimes even depressing. It’s about this guy (played by Hartnett, of course) who pledged not to engage in any sort of sexual activities for the duration of lent after an awful breakup. The catch, of course, is when he fell in love with this girl during that 40 days, cue scenes of seduction. Meh, watch if you want. You won’t be missing much.
